In this episode of TI:TALKS, Ricki and TI’s editor, James, discuss cybersecurity talent and the recent ban of X (Twitter) in Brazil after the country’s presidential election due to the spread of misinformation and disinformation across the platform.

They explore the difficulties governments face in regulating social media platforms while maintaining free speech and Elon Musk’s controversial stance on free speech absolutionism.

The conversation then moves to an insightful interview with Tom Alcock, founder of Code Red Partners, who shares his expertise in cybersecurity recruitment. He discusses the need to recruit beyond traditional methods, emphasising practical experience and diverse backgrounds.

Alcock also highlights the challenges of retaining cybersecurity talent, especially the importance of creating inclusive environments that foster engagement and prevent attrition to illicit opportunities. Diversity, he explains, plays a crucial role in bringing new perspectives and enhancing the overall effectiveness of cybersecurity recruitment.

In this week’s podcast, TI discusses Labour’s vows to the UK tech industry after its landslide win in the country’s recent election. The party promised to invest in AI in the healthtech industry, something former Prime Minister Tony Blair believes the NHS needs, but isn’t data-ready for. Plus, industry experts claim a change in regulation will only make such digital advancements possible. (Read more industry opinions on the new government here.)

The Labour Party also promised to crack down on the issue of misinformation – a topic dominating politics this year with millions taking to the polls around the world. TI examines recent discourse around the UK political party, Reform, and allegations that some of their candidates were deepfakes.

Then, Roman Spitzbart, VP EMEA solutions engineering at Dynatrace, joins the podcast to discuss observability and how it can help secure a firm’s cloud applications. Spitzbart explains how cloud environments have become more complex with the increase of digital transformation, and how tools such as observability can help firms get a handle on it.

We also talk about our recent interview with Dynatrace’s customer Soldo, a fintech platform for enterprises, on how it is using the observability platform to secure its cloud environment.

In this week’s podcast, we explore how executives and employees alike have grown accustomed to the benefits of remote and hybrid working. The flexibility provided by these arrangements surveys say, has improved work-life balance, reduced burnout, and increased overall job satisfaction.

However, a recent Gartner report highlights a disconnect between the desires of leadership and staff regarding the future of work. While 60% of HR leaders mentioned considering return-to-office mandates, a significant portion of executives and non-executives preferred remote or hybrid working models. Read the full story here.

Also this week, Richard Meeus, director of security technology and strategy for EMEA at Akamai discusses the merits of law enforcement’s uncovering of one cybercrime gang leader’s alledged indentity.  With 20 years’ experience in the field, Meeus recognises cybercrime as one of the most significant threats to UK security. He emphasises the growing concern surrounding cybercrime, which he says is projected to be worth $10.5 trillion by 2025.

One of the most prolific cyber gangs, LockBit, has been in the news recently after its leader was unmasked and named by NCA and the FBI. In a previous article, TI examined the criminal ransomware gang and its recently exposed leader, with cyber security expert Lisa Forte.

Preventative measures against ransomware attacks

Richard Meeus highlighted some key preventative measures businesses and organisations can take to protect themselves against ransomware attacks. He says these measures are crucial in safeguarding critical data and mitigating the risks associated with cyber threats.

1. Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Richard emphasised the importance of implementing multi-factor authentication as a fundamental security measure. MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring users to provide multiple verification forms before accessing sensitive data or systems. By incorporating MFA, organisations can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorised access and enhance overall security posture.

2. Maintain good cyber hygiene

Another essential aspect of preventing ransomware attacks is maintaining good cyber hygiene. This includes practices such as using strong passwords, regularly updating software and security patches, conducting security awareness training for employees, and implementing anti-phishing measures. By adhering to these basic cybersecurity practices, organisations can create a more resilient defence against potential threats.

3. Assume breach and protect critical data

Meeus suggested that organisations adopt a proactive approach by assuming they have been breached. This strategy involves preparing for the possibility of a security breach and focusing on protecting critical data assets. By identifying and securing the most valuable and sensitive data within the organisation, businesses can prioritise their security efforts and minimise the impact of potential breaches. Implementing segmentation and micro-segmentation techniques can help isolate and protect these critical assets from unauthorised access.
